Middle school is the first level at which special certification for a math teacher is required.

The teacher must pass a test and take training on middle school math topics like early algebra, statistics and things like median, mean and mode.

Passing this test allows the teacher to teach in this environment and to teach students in grades 6 through 8.

Prior to these grades, a regular school teacher can teach the students what they need to know in math.

A teacher only needs to have a Bachelor’s Degree in college education to be able to teach high school math.

Some schools offer advanced classes in calculus as well. Teachers need not only to understand the subject matter but need to know how to teach such subjects to students of the high school age group. Learning how to teach is a crucial part of the process prospective teachers must undergo.

Some of the subjects a teacher needs to understand well are trigonometry, geometry, algebra and pre-calculus.

A college level math teacher is generally a professor who is well trained in mathematics and has either a Master’s degree or a PhD in Mathematics.

There are teacher’s assistants who are training to get their master’s degree and who help teach the classes to the students.

The primary topics involved in teaching college-level mathematics are calculus and linear algebra. Algebra and trigonometry are sometimes taught as well to students who didn’t get that education while they were in high school. No special certification other than professorship status are required for math teachers at that level of education.
